Beli’s history stretches back more than 4,000 years, which makes it one of the oldest settlements on Cres Island. The village was founded by the Liburnians, an ancient people of the eastern Adriatic, and later inhabited by Romans, Venetians and Croats, each leaving their mark on its architecture and traditions. In Roman times the settlement was called Caput Insulae, the Head of the Island, and a hillfort stood on the cliff. Beli’s hilltop location provided natural defense and a vantage point over the sea, while its stone houses, narrow streets and old churches evoke a sense of timelessness. The Church of St. Mary, with its Romanesque features, and the medieval city gate are highlights for history enthusiasts. In the 20th century many villagers left, and the population fell sharply, but a number of houses have been restored by newcomers.

The main attraction in Beli is the Beli Visitor Centre, which includes the Rescue Centre for Griffon Vultures, an organisation that plays a crucial role in protecting these large birds. Visitors can learn about the life cycle of griffon vultures, watch them in flight and join educational programs. The center also organizes guided birdwatching tours and nature walks in the surrounding Tramuntana forest, a protected area rich in biodiversity, hiking trails and ancient labyrinths. Griffon vultures, with a wingspan of about 2.5 meters, nest on the cliffs of Cres and are fed and monitored by conservationists, and a visit in the morning or late afternoon gives the best chances of seeing them soar above the sea. Outdoor activities abound in Beli and its surroundings. The Tramuntana area offers well-marked hiking and cycling routes through oak and chestnut forests, past stone labyrinths and up to panoramic viewpoints. The Labyrinthe in Tramuntana, a network of stone mazes built by local volunteers, and the nearby rock sculptures add a mystical touch to the landscape, and walking through them is a quiet and meditative experience. Adventurous visitors can try the Zip Line Beli, which offers rides with views over the forest and sea.

Beli’s secluded pebble beach, reached by a steep path from the village, is good for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing in a clean setting, and the bays of Lokva and Sveti Petar offer additional quiet places on the coast. The path down takes about half an hour, and the climb back up is demanding, so visitors should bring water and wear sturdy shoes. The harbor is a starting point for boat trips along the Cres coastline, while local restaurants and guesthouses serve fresh seafood, lamb and homemade island specialties. Restaurant Tramontana and the tavern Ostarija Beli are places to try Cres lamb, which is known for its flavor because the sheep graze on wild herbs. Community events and festivals celebrate Beli’s traditions, music and natural heritage, giving visitors a chance to experience authentic island life.

Getting to Beli requires a scenic drive along winding island roads from the town of Cres, with parking available at the edge of the village. The historic center is pedestrian-only, preserving its peaceful atmosphere. Accommodation options are limited to a few guesthouses and private apartments, so advance booking is recommended, especially in summer.

The best time to visit Beli is from June to September, when the weather is warm, the sea is inviting and the hiking trails and wildlife activities are in full swing. Spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures, fewer visitors and beautiful scenery, suited to hiking and birdwatching.
