Našice

Našice is a town steeped in history, and its modern shape owes most to the Pejačević family, one of the great noble houses of Croatia and Slavonia, who acquired the estate in the 18th century and made the town their seat. The family developed Našice into a center of trade and culture, helped by its position on routes between the plain and the Papuk hills. The Pejačević Castle, in its present Baroque-revival form largely the result of 19th-century work, is one of the main attractions today. The building stands in the middle of town, surrounded by a landscaped park with old trees, and it houses the town museum, which presents local history, the family and the region’s culture.

The Pejačević name is also tied to music. Dora Pejačević, born in 1885, grew up in the family’s Našice home and became one of the first Croatian composers to write symphonic works. She died young, in 1923, and is buried in the family tomb in the town cemetery. Visitors interested in music will find that her story adds depth to a walk through the castle park.

Another significant attraction is the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua, a Baroque church with detailed decoration and religious art. Beyond them the Krndija and Papuk hills have marked trails through beech forests, with viewpoints and old orchards, and vineyards line the slopes where the plain begins.

Getting to Našice is straightforward, since the town is well connected by road and rail. The nearest major city is Osijek, about 30 kilometers away, with an airport that has connections to larger cities in Croatia and beyond. From Osijek, visitors can take a bus or train to Našice, which makes it easy to visit for a day or a longer stay. Accommodation includes hotels, guesthouses and rural lodgings, and the town’s restaurants serve Slavonian specialties.
