History

Stari Grad, which translates to "Old Town," is one of the oldest settlements in Europe, with roots tracing back to 384 BC. Founded by Ionian Greeks from the island of Paros, the settlers were drawn to the region by its natural harbor and fertile land. Unlike many ancient sites that have been rebuilt or altered over centuries, Stari Grad has maintained a remarkable continuity of life and landscape. The town’s layout and the surrounding agricultural fields have remained largely unchanged for over two millennia, offering a rare glimpse into the ancient world. This historical significance was formally recognized when the Stari Grad Plain was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving the original Greek geometric field division system that is still in use today.

The heart of Stari Grad is its historic center, characterized by narrow limestone lanes, palm-fringed promenades, and a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the more commercialized Hvar Town nearby. A key landmark is Tvrdalj Castle, a 16th-century fortress built by the poet Petar Hektorović. Just outside the town walls lies the Stari Grad Plain, the most significant cultural landscape in the area. This 6-kilometer stretch of land from Stari Grad to Vrboska preserves the ancient Greek system of field division, known as chora. Visitors can walk or cycle through this protected area, observing stone walls, olive groves, and vineyards that have been cultivated using traditional methods for over 2,400 years. Another notable site is the Lacman Family Winery, located in the nearby village of Zavala, which offers insights into the region’s long-standing viticulture traditions and produces high-quality local wines.

Getting There

Stari Grad is located on the island of Hvar in the Dalmatia region of Croatia. The most common way to reach the town is by ferry from Split, which takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Ferries depart regularly from the Split Ferry Terminal and arrive at the Stari Grad port. Alternatively, visitors can take a catamaran from Split or other coastal towns, though these services may be seasonal. Once on the island, local buses connect Stari Grad with Hvar Town and other villages, but renting a car or bicycle offers greater flexibility for exploring the surrounding areas.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Stari Grad is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is warm and pleasant, ideal for cycling and outdoor activities, while the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. July and August offer the most vibrant atmosphere but also bring higher temperatures and increased tourism. Winter months are quiet, with many businesses closed, making it less suitable for general tourism but ideal for those seeking solitude and a glimpse into local life away from the tourist season.
