Lovinac

Lovinac’s history stretches back long before the Middle Ages. The Japodi, an Iron Age people of Lika, built hillforts on the heights, and the remains of Japod fort Cvituša and Japod fort Rukavinska gradina are among the archaeological sites that visitors can explore on foot. A reconstructed Roman road in the village shows a stretch of the ancient route that crossed Lika, giving a tangible link to the past. In the Middle Ages Lovinac developed as a fortified settlement on the edge of the Velebit Mountains, and the ruins of the Lovinac Fortress, on a hill above the village, bear witness to centuries of defence against Ottoman invasions and the region’s strategic importance. Over time Lovinac became a center for agriculture, forestry and traditional crafts, with its residents maintaining a close connection to the land. Smaller landmarks, such as the Zdunić tower and the Travić mill, a 19th-century mill, add layers of local history.

The nearby Cerovac Caves are among the largest and most impressive in Croatia, with guided tours that reveal underground chambers, stalactites and archaeological finds. Lovinac is also a base for adventure sports such as horseback riding, rafting and mountain biking. The Izletište Cvituša area offers ski and snowboard facilities in winter, while the surrounding rivers and lakes provide opportunities for fishing, kayaking and picnicking. The best time to visit Lovinac is from May to June and September, when the weather is mild, the forests are lush and the trails are good for hiking and cycling. Summer offers cooler temperatures than the coast, making it a refreshing escape, while winter is suited to snow sports and enjoying the peaceful mountain landscape.
